Multisensory Integration in the Virtual Hand Illusion with Active Movement

Improving the sense of immersion is one of the core issues in virtual reality. Perceptual illusions of ownership can be perceived over a virtual body in a multisensory virtual reality environment. Rubber Hand and Virtual Hand Illusions showed that body ownership can be manipulated by applying suitable visual and tactile stimulation. In this study, we investigate the effects of multisensory inte...

Visual illusions affect planning but not control.

Much debate has arisen over how to account for the pattern of effects of visual illusions on action - that is, the findings that illusions affect actions in some circumstances but not others. I propose that this pattern can best be explained by postulating that visual illusions affect the planning of actions but do not affect the on-line control of actions. Strong evidence for this viewpoint co...

Visuelle Welt: a Windows program for demonstrating visual-perception phenomena.

The Windows program Visuelle Welt allows the demonstration of various visual phenomena such as geometrical-optical illusions, subjective contours, apparent movement, and Gestalt principles. One of the program's most interesting features is that the illusion-inducing context can be switched off, and in addition for many phenomena parameters can be varied interactively.

Visual illusions, delayed grasping, and memory: no shift from dorsal to ventral control.

We tested whether a delay between stimulus presentation and grasping leads to a shift from dorsal to ventral control of the movement, as suggested by the perception-action theory of Milner and Goodale (Milner, A.D., & Goodale, M.A. (1995). The visual brain in action. Oxford: Oxford University Press.). In this theory the dorsal cortical stream has a short memory, such that after a few seconds th...

Motor illusions: what do they reveal about proprioception?

Five illusions involving distortions in the perception of limb position, movement, and weight are described in the context of their contribution to understanding the sensory processes involved in proprioception. In particular, these illusions demonstrate that the position sense representation of the body and the awareness of limb movement result from the cross-calibration of visual and proprioc...

Visual symptoms in Parkinson's disease and Parkinson's disease dementia.

Visual symptoms are common in PD and PD dementia and include difficulty reading, double vision, illusions, feelings of presence and passage, and complex visual hallucinations. Despite the established prognostic implications of complex visual hallucinations, the interaction between cognitive decline, visual impairment, and other visual symptoms remains poorly understood. Our aim was to character...
